REGIONALE 17

Agassishorn (right hand to Finsteraarhorn)
From far in the South, a traveller made her way across an ocean to a land up North. She had heard that others before her had embarked on this journey and settled there. The traveller was keen to hear their stories and – a songstress by trade - to render them to music. So she set out to find them and soon met a fellow traveller. “Please sing me your songs”, she asked him. “We don’t sing much around here”, he replied. “Our songs don’t echo well in this place. Let me show you.” He started humming a melody. “You see?”, he said. “Sch”, she whispered, leaning into the silence “I think I hear something.”
Together with a diverse group of fellow travellers, artists and cultural practitioners based in Switzerland, Kadiatou Diallo explores stories of those who live here, but who do not (or cannot) quite belong; stories that have been silent or silenced, forgotten or buried.
This project consists of a series of encounters that resist silence (or use silence as resistance); seeking to compose the muted Schhhh into the reverberating stories it longs to tell - about SCHweigen, SCHweiz, SCHweiss, GeSCHichte, SCHichten, SCHützen, SCHerzen, SCHämen, SCHreien, SCHwarz, falSCH, (ver)SCHwinden…
The programme of events is here.
From august to december 2016 Kadiatou Diallo is guestcurator at Ausstellungsraum Klingental. Kadiatou Diallo interests are „new“ and „other“ stories in the relations between the two continents Africa and Europe, existing for centuries. Switzerland, especially Basel, builds a particular frame to this research due to its evangelization history and extensive archives.
The guestcurator residency is organised by Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council, Atelier Mondial and Ausstellungsraum Klingental.
