The two bands OPPRESSED BY PRIVILEGE and PRIVILEGED BY OPPRESSION, consisting of privileged white members, will each perform their inaugural concert at the Ausstellungsraum Klingental – simultaneously

In accordance with democratic principles, the public was invited to submit original texts in response to the respective band names OPPRESSED BY PRIVILEGE and PRIVILEGED BY OPPRESSION.

The submitted texts serve as the raw material that the artists then adapt and interpret musically. The result will be presented live on the 14th of June 2017. All original texts will be compiled and published in book form by Stingray Editions.

bell hooks defined oppression as follows: „Being oppressed means the absence of choices“. But what if the privilege to choose becomes paralysing, rather than enabling? What does it mean to live in an affluent society that can no longer deny the fact that our wealth is inseparably tied to oppression? The surplus of goods and the estrangement from simple and ordinary activities have allowed for new ideals and lifestyles to emerge, such as the “Zero Waste” movement, Veganism or Minimalism (e.g. Living with less than 100 things). But these are luxuries in themselves, reserved for the privileged of society who can afford to renounce but are never forced to.
