The exhibition Meanwhile, elsewhere juxtaposes works by three artists who explore the perception and representation of landscapes. The term ‘landscape’ already presupposes aesthetic categories including the picturesque, the sublime, and the beautiful, and as a heterotopia takes the position of a counterpart to man-made architectures and urban landscapes. In Lorenza Diaz’ paintings landscape becomes a timeless and deserted dystopia. For Sybella Perry the starting point for her work is often the personal fascination with certain locations including English landscape gardens and peripherally located drive-in cinemas. While the primary subject of Sylvain Baumann’s installation is Modern and contemporary architecture, his work mirrors ideas around landscape and nature through the ideological conversion of architecture as men’s ‘natural habitat’, where unidentifiable tropical plants play their part symbolising conquered landscapes and domesticated nature.
